Yeah, what Mags said is sooo true..... getting the contacts is 75% of the battle! Its all very well and good making the most blinding tune out there, but if you can't get anybody to listen to it then whats the point? I mean can you imagine how many demos the big labels must get through their letter boxes each week!!

College is one way to make the contacts AND get the skills, but to be honest it isn't essential IMO. Certainly within the Hardcore scene it is quite easy to get talking with some of the big players, as most of them are quite friendly. Hang round record shops and go to events, get to know the staff, get to know the other DJs in your area, chances are they will know other people who will know other people etc..... networking!!

Another tip, always be professional. If you act like a professional, then other people will take you more seriously.

Other than that its just a case of playing it by ear, and when an opportunity arises grab it with both hands!

in summer i started a music tecnology course in huddersfield, i gota recomend it. i dont think it will get you into the music business directly as they will tell u on the course. apparently that is about being at the right place at the right time and who you know but to lern all aspects of the music business i dont think i could be in a better place. the course covers, the music industry, listening skills, MIDI secuensing and computer softwear, sound recording, studio production, studio production+major project??, Keyboard skills (loda shite) the freelance world, computer tec for music, digital audio, dj tecnology, event management, accustics and live sounds, multimedia sound production, music publishing, music tech in performance, sound creation and manipulation and sound for the moving image. the only thing it doesent give you is actual working experiance although you can get work experiance as part of the course.

oh s*it man, what was i saying?

Ah yes, mrc just reminded me to make the point that you should learn all you can about the Music Biz, and its practices.... areas such as copyright and all the legal mumbo jumbo is ESSENTIAL!!! If you don't do a course, you can learn it all yourself.... there are loads of books on the subject, and theres loads of stuff on the net.... www.soundonsound.com is a grat starting place
