I started out about 7months ago with my Soundlab DLP-3R's they are reasonably good, although i got em of ma bro for £50 (one of the two proffesional scratch needles he gave to me were worth more than that lol) as long as he could still use them. But the only downside was that they have needed servicing since ive had them.......i can beatmatch sometimes......and i have been tryin to do this 10minute mix tape for this competition and ive even written down the pitch so i dont have to beatmatch the tunes and it still goes wrong.........argghhhhh!
Anyways straying from the point there lol..............From what ive been told and what i have seen (as there are quite a few semi-pro djs in my village) the best djs start out on belt drives.......as they are hard to mix with......you then learn to beatmatch etc with them, and then as soon as you start on direct drives you can do it so much easier and quicker that after getting used to them your amazing.........Also another good point of belt drives is that they are cheap and if you suddenly find you dont like DJing and its not the thing for you, that you havnt lost a load of money! (unless your vinyl addiction is as bad as mine!)
So id say start out with a basic package.......ive been told the stanton and gemini ones are good (stay away from numark, it falls apart lol! my mate got one for last xmas, and the only thing that still works is the mike lol!)
Hope that helps you anyways
Adam

started out on Kam BDX300's(belts) and kmx150 scratch mixer, decent enuff at the time, now on 1210 mk2's and djx700, may upgrade the mixer in 6months to a djm600, but the 1210s are brand new so they aint gonna need serviced for a long time :)

I spent $700 for the set-up. It's not the same kinda package that you get out of a catalog or store. The guy I bought it from was goin' to Iraq so he had to get rid of 'em. Sounds like your gettin' a good deal.........you can always upgrade in the future.

yeah, thats the plan anyway ..... get cheap decks and spend the extra money on vinyl, once i got the basics and know its something i wanna do i can upgrade, however long that takes! i wanna go straight to something pretty trick after these tho, ttx-1's or 1210's.. dunno which tho!

I started on a pair of soundlab belt drives...... and I still use them!
To anybody starting out I would strongly suggest starting out with belt drives. The thing with belt drives is that they don't hold their pitch, and so drift during the mix, so you have to keep correcting it. This makes you work really hard to keep the mix tight, and this is what makes you good at beat matching. If you can mix well on belt drives then you can mix well on anything!

My first tables I got in September of 2002. They were Numark TT-200's and they were pretty cool. I just recently moved onto Technics SL-1210 M5G's (yeah, big step) but my old tables I sold to a friend, so I'm happy.
