Was wondering if there's anyway to use a computer DJing progam to play tunes, and run it with two channels through my mixer? I don't have the room to bring my decks and vinyl when i go back to school, nor do i have the money for a pair of cdjs or a midi controller, so I was wondering if there's any way to do this? I think I could find space for my mixer, which is a urei 1601 if it matters.
to sum up, i basically want to have the laptop running the music as inputs into the two channels of the mixer, so i can mix using the mixer but control the tunes themselves with the laptop. hope this makes sense!

your looking to run two different songs at the same time out of your computer into two separate channels of your mixer?
im thinking for that trick you need two soundcards and then some software to be able to keep em active at the same time... though dont quote me on that, because i dont mess with mp3 DJing
ive never bothered to move from vinyl and havent got the ££ for CD decks yet!
*edit* im sure that some mp3dj on here has done it, but i'll have a browse around a bit - looks like you can get soundcards with multiple outputs as well..
*edit again* wait a laptop....well, you can still get an external soundcard or a pcmcia/xpresspcmcia card....one with two outputs

Solution...
buy an (external) soundcard for your laptop ($29.99)
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000J0IIEQ?tag=softjockcom-20&camp=14573&creative=327641&linkCode=as1&creativeASIN=B000J0IIEQ&adid=0HVNVD5G2FRAJ0Z9F95W& then get some DJ Software which will let you map the channels to each of the soundcards most DJ software will let you do this and will have a screen that looks somewhat like this..

nm..i just re-read your post.
all you need then is trackor or Rockit DJ Studio

I'm a bit confused by the graphic they have here, where does the mixer itself fit into it? Where will the differentiation between channels from the laptop into the mixer occur?

What you need is a usb or firewire soundcard with two audio outputs. Once installed, in your dj program you assign the left deck to the first audio output, and the right deck to the second audio output, both outputs being routed through your mixer. You can then do all the audio mixing and track cueing on your mixer
Here is an image to show what i mean

see you dont even need a soundcard with two audio outputs, cause just by buying an external soundcard you've added a second soundcard, so the software can see the internal soundcard and the external one, channel one comes from the internal, channel two the external.

Yeah you can do it no prob! It's exactly the same as plugging decks on, the only difference is the sound source! It's really that simple. Although yes you'd need a sound card with multiple audio channels/outputs (4 in this case). 4 because obviously stereo = 2 mono (Left and right). I assume your mixer receives 2 cables from each deck, so you know what im on about.
