I've had a fantastic idea to use a product for something different that has never been used before, does anyone know if the idea only can be used as a patent?

you can't really patent an idea, just as you can't copyright one either
if you're just using an existing product in a new way, that's not really something you can patent, as that existing product probably already has a patent. unless you create an invention that is tailored for your idea, and it doesn't look in any way similar to this existing product, then that you can patent.

You can patent an idea or invention but you need to prove it is not already invented and that costs money, a full international patent costs millions of dollars.

unless you've got a lot of money or someone behind u with a lot of money an knowledge about patents I wouldn't bother about it... I'd email the dragons den if I was you ;)
