Basically I have two external hard drives that i have stuff on, and sometimes one of a few memory sticks (only ever one at a time). Pretty standard.
Normally each of the external HDDs will go to K: and L:. with the memory sticks coming in an M:.
The ****ing annoying this is, if i unplug them, or accidently plug them in not in order, they all switch around. Not so much of an issue... UNTIL YOU LOAD SOMETHING IN FL!
Every time i have to go through that shitty prompt to find files because the destination path has changed.
So is there any way to manually change the letters drives are assigned to? Or anyone else know a solution to this problem?
Cheers
*edit* whoops... using windows 7

In XP start menu right click my computer and choose "control" (or something similar i'm using finnish OS), from there find the drive and and choose 'change drive letter'.
Id assume their more or less in the same places in win 7.

Yeah, right click Computer and then Manage in Win7 to see drives. I can't change the letter of my external HDD, but that might be because it's FAT32 (yes, I know I should have formatted to NTFS, but I never got around to it, and now that it's almost full I cba transferring everything ;p).
Also, I have all samples stored on my internal disc ;p
I also have a Q:-drive showing up in Computer, but this one has a capacity of 0 bytes, doesnt show up in Computer Management. Boggles the mind!

If you have e.g. a printer that has a memory stick hub, it might show up as a drive with nothing innit.

Dante: Don't format it to NTFS, keep it fat32 so that mac's and other PC's can easily read it. Unless you really need the extra file permission security there is no reason to reformat it.
You can change drive letters in the drive manager, I'd screenshot you but I run Japanese windows 7 so that aint gonna help you.

Whats wrong with NTFS? Also you cant really even use windows without NTFS file system.
The only problem as silver said is interaction with mac and linux.

Which I interact with Linux on a daily to hourly basis, so you can see why I hate NTFS and having to reformat everything with a separate program and not through windows.

But at least you can read the files. Mac and Linux on the other hand use something completely their own and it doesn't work with anything else. So i think your hatred is a bit misjustified.

On XP: Rightclick "My Computer" and select Manage
On Vista/7: locate and rightclick on Computer and select Manage
Go To Disk mananger and find your harddrive partition you want to change, rightclick and select "change driver letter..."
if its for external, try changing them to some higher letter, but Im not sure if windows remember them on different USB ports. This wont change the letters on other computers, jsut your own

And I think your hate of anything not XP is misjustified, to each to their own especially when it comes to computers.

It actually can, but you have to use a stand alone program to allow a larger format. I'd use NTFS if it didn't hinder my day to day workings.

do you really need to have all partitions formated to FAT/NNTFS then? Keep the Windows only files on a NTFS (preferblt for a OS disc) and have a partition where you share the files you want on both on. And I'm pretty sure there are working NTFS reading drivers for linux now, surely?

They're too stand alone systems, I have to transfer via a flash drive or external HDD. What I just want to do is set up another system to link both of my computers too through a network to store all my information on so I don't have to be arsed to anything else. I just haven't gotten around to doing that yet, mostly because I'm too lazy to tinker with the server settings.
