My head is wrecked nowadays with all these sub genres of dance music.
Its impossible to keep up with it all.Back when i startin ravin years ago life was so
much easier.
Djs would mix loads of tunes together no1 would give a piss and imo nights out were much better for it.Now we have to contend with hardcore only, tech house only, prog house only, disco house only, blah blah.(Not really the best examples but its all that came into me head).
Just sayin that it used to be rapid to have a bit of variation.
Im not a gynecologist, but ill have a good look at it for you!!

Im not suggesting that djs drop a brittney spears tune in a set but something a bit different is always good.

I hear what you are saying, but then again, is that not what certain parties try to bring by having sevral different rooms with different musical styles?
The problem with today is that there are in fact so many more styles than there were before and that the consumer has more choice and is therefore more selective. Competition is on the rise and sub genres need to be created to differenciate themselves from the rest in order to ceate new innovative markets. You have to remember that this is all a business market as well.
Times are changing, and so are the market economies

True, but I've never ever seen what I would consider a sound explanation of the difference between DnB and jungle, or between epic trance and anthem trance ... sure some distinctions need to be made (eg there's no way HHC is the same genre a trip-hop) but it seems to me that a lot of these subgenres were just invented by some creative marketing hack trying to up the sales of a new producer's releases.
What's worse is that you see some ridiculous subgenres invented, not to describe a producer's sound, but a DJ's. That's just wrong IMHO. Damn flier hype.

Exactly, it's all about business and marketing new products that need to be diferentiated from others in order to offer innovative new products. (even though they arn't really all that new) I'm a business communicator, so I study this stuff at unniversity

I study Business Administration as my second degree to complement my law degree. While I do agree with you from a business perspective, I was arguing my point as an enthusiast.

as far as im concerned, if its 4-beat its either too slow, slow, midpace, fast, or too fast, and if its breakbeaty its eitha good or bad
and stuff like aphex twin, which is always good.
but over all, there are only 2 genres that matter, wot u consider good an wot u consider bad. if its good, u listen to it, if it aint, you take the piss out of evryone hu duz...
joke!

I got into this scene when it was called 'rave music' even old skool was refered to as hardcore then. Whilst I agree with Angel and Strychnine on the business aspects from one who came from the collective scene I to find it difficult to understand why firstly House then Jungle broke away other than money.
Strychnine I have to say Hard steppin Jungle is the opposite to D&B where the breakbeats and tempo are more important than the Basslines other than that there is no difference, D&B seems to have more wailing women on it while Hardstep has a lot of Gangstar criminals talking about weed, guns and how hard they are. Though that is a bit of a generalization.
I loved the scene when I started, I love it now, I just have to pick my genres that never exisited even though I knew what they were. The only shame is I don't hear new stuff from garage, house or trance as I am not usually at those nights unless dragged along by a friend.
On another topic, with cd decks I thing dj's have a duty to be new and different as they allow you to try new thing's I for instance am messing around with the
Simpsons, Theme to Monkey magic, Clangers, Bagpuss, Danger mouse, Count Duckula, Theme from 'Cheers', Moomins, Taxi and Grange Hill. Sorry this is mainly for UK crew but, in the interests of the scene its up to the dj to make the night something different
Your into the sound of Rebellion
