Just wondering if antone else has got this problem too. When i mix in some records the lie fairly heavy on the decks whereas some lie really light on there which makes it a pain to try and adjust the speed when a mix ent tight. Is it just me that has this or does anyone else mess up some mixes due to stupidly light vinyl

Do you mean it feels like the vinyl's slippery and there's no grip between the vinyl and slipmatt? With some when I stroke the edge of the vinyl to slow it down it comes to a complete stop while the plater is still spinning.  Is that more or less what happens?

I hate that... quick remedy? Squeeze the spindle between thumb and forefinger or drag on the platter.

Yeah that excatly what i mean. I gues im not the only one then. Its ok trying to slow it down but its speeding it up i always really struggle with.

Try making adjustments with the pitch control instead of touching the platter.

I think it's down to the slipmatt aswell, some vinyl's that do it on my decks don't seem to do it on other peoples.
My decks have a pitch bend feature, like what you find on CD decks but as mine are budget direct drive decks (Gemini SA600 mark 2) it can be pretty dodgy using it. Plus there's nothing like the old touchey-feeley

Funny that ive got the sa600 turntables too. Cant say i use the pitch bend either really. Ive been after descent slipmatts for a while but cant really find any. Any recommendations?

Try getting some really cushy slipmats. I've got fuzzy ones and it helps with records that are severely bowled... it doesn't fix the problem, but it helps. It's usually best to adjust without touching the record, even if the record is perfectly flat. The spindle technique is what I use and it works a lot better than touching the record.
I've heard of putting bowled records out in the sun between two panes of glass... anyone ever tried this? How bout the hair dryer method?

The record might be a little warped and thus not touching the slipmatt 100%
or
If a record is slipping to much get a tiny square of paper and place it on the center record pin then press the record over the paper and push the pin through the paper via the record hole. This will cause the paper to go inside the record hole and gripping the record much much better. Also good if the record hole is sloppy (moves around).

I agree with silver's theories too.
If you are using 1210's and the record you are playing is 33rpm, you get get a simliar 'pitchy bendy' effect by quickly pressing the 45rpm button and then the 33rpm one again. Or regardless of deck, just over pitch the track and slow it down using the platter instead of trying to push it forward. This can actually sound better, if you are adjusting pitch live, not that you should be...
Stacking dished (warped, bowed, bowled, whatever!) records between lots of others for long periods of time can help flatten them out. Don't iron them tho... even through a towel... that's just silly... i'd never do that... no... never!

Get some nice plain black technics ones from IMO Records or summot (imodj.com) and iron em a bit!

make use of those school books, put them onto the record on a flat surface, works like a charm

another thing that works is to put a couple pieces of tape close to the record hole so that it will have a snug fit on the spindle

I've got "light vinyl" problems with phoshpors side of till the day for exmpl.
I've also had the opposite but not as much.
as for slipmats I recently got me a pair of stantons designed by dj focus made for scratching.they've got a bunch of holes on them which are supposed to reduce friction.nice and slippy.
