How could giving it away for free work? heh.. well thing is you have to realise it's not as clear cut as 'all mp3's are evil'.
Example - I uploaded a mate a copy of a bonkers cd I'd just bought. He'd never have just gone out and bought it on his own. After he heard it, he's bought all the bonkers cd since.
Hardcore expands . . .
Sadly I feel this kind of usuage is in the minority. And for that reason I understand Silvers stand on the issue.

Hardcore is not a big genre and when your only selling 500 vinyl per release and perhaps 1000 CD's imagine how much 1 download hurts (taking the example that 1 download is 1 CD or vinyl not sold). Most people are just lazy, the internet is everything now now now... so most people want their 2 min cookies in 10 seconds... you can find whatever you want if you look hard enough. I have found every record I wanted to buy with time...
Sorry if I am about to say something stupid again, but here goes...
Couldn't someone set up a site where you pay for the right to download an mp3, that way there is still money coming in from it, and then if you want to buy the vinyl the cost of the mp3 is deducted from this. Could this idea work (in theory)??? If this could happen then people who were skint (like me) could listen to music without having to pay (sometimes) very expensive prices for vinyl.....
(Please don't shoot me for saying this - I did not mean to start a bitch-slapping contest.......)

They are trying to make it (iTunes, Music Match), but now they only have popular music there, maby in the near future there could also be some electronic music, and maby some Hardcore also...
The iTunes is pretty cool, you can first listen to the tunes and then deside if you want to buy it or not... I think it was 0.99$/tune, but now its only pop music there (and for US residents, i think?).
Then theres also http://www.beats24-7.com witch sells customised CD's, you can first listen the clips and deside what tunes you want. I think that was £1/tune... This has LOTS of Hardcore tunes... So there is some progress in this era _____________________________________________ They've done it to me, their gonna do it to you!

I could get all the hardcore I ever needed for free if I wanted. I know someone who has whole lot hardcore. I buy hardcore simply to support the artist, like silver said hardcore isn't a big genre so we need to by all of our music.

Oooh, controversy!
I honestly believe that there is some good in MP3s. For example, a new artist just starting out could use them for promotional purposes. Once they've built a reputation and fan-base, it'd be more likely that people would purchase their records. Thus, MP3s can be used to for the artist's advantage, not unlike those free promo CDs.
BUT! (and this is a big one, heh) That's ONLY if it has the artist's permission. If you're downloading music which is copyright and which the artist has not expressly stated as being free for download, then you're just plain old stealing. Maybe a couple of dollars lost here and there isn't going to hurt someone like Madonna or Michael Jackson, but in a scene as small as the hardcore genre, it's just not right.
And that's my two cents ...

well i would too, but if i was to buy music in digital form, i'd much rather have the actual cd with artwork and everything then a cd-r with marker on it.

Me too, and just have to say that Japanese cd's (Avex Trax) have the best covers, they look soo cool and i always feel like getting something extra when i buy one. Also in the Next Gen. album the actual cd looks very good.

like the rumours said cd's only had a lifespan of 10 years. BOLLOX!
and besides,cd's won't be round much longer in that format. i'll give it 10 years before cd's are sold with the tunes in mp3 format
