Apologies in advance to anybody I may offend, by discussing this issue, but who else agrees that MP3s are a great way of self promotion for unsigned artists? I am not speaking of file sharing here, but the files made available by the artists' on their websites for the general public to download for free.

One thing I often do on the internet is searching for homemade tracks of any genre that are of good quality, that are made available royalty free. There's many a good artist out there, that is still unsigned, that deserves a record deal. If you are a DJ who earns money from playing it, it is only fair , that you donate to these artists, if you copy the mp3 to a CD-R and play their track out at a gig. If you aren't willing to donate, you should at least give the artist some constructive feedback.
There's also many good artists out there that don't even want a record deal, they just want to produce tracks for fun, and share them with the world as a hobby, and not have to endure the demands of full time production. For example I don't consider myself to be a good enough producer to ever try to get a record deal, but I have put a track on the net.
( www.buffrey.freeserve.co.uk/Kylee_B-Untitled.rm - I use real media files as opposed to MP3s because they are smaller, and don't take too long to upload )

Also, Is there any artists out there who are signed to a label, who use mp3s as an alternative to dubplates and white labels during the early stages of production, or would consider doing so? Aren't a lot of promos on CD-R instead of dubplates these days?

too true, there are plenty of legit sites like vitaminic / mp3.com that help wannabe producers use their sites as platforms for hosting their tracks, it can only be a good thing

Agreed.

Legitimate mp3's are a brilliant way for artists to get their music out to people.

As long as it's what the artist wants that's fine.

yah, if you produce a tune then burn it to play out or give it to a dj to play out, i don't see what could be wrong about that because you'd own the rights to it, therefore you can do with it what you want correct?

i think anyone will agree that mp3 file compression format is useful, if used properly.

MP3 is a great music format, Ogg Vorbis is better depending on what your doing in my oppinion though, but MP3 is the ruling format at the moment.

yeah, i agree with virus on this one, i have my own mp3 site...but...

i would like to be informed if they were played out. someone could easily nick your mp3, get it re-done without you knowing and release it. by this time theres nothing you can do about it. i'd prefer it if it was a 'talk to me about it first kinda thing.'

"Also, Is there any artists out there who are signed to a label, who use mp3s as an alternative to dubplates and white labels during the early stages of production, or would consider doing so? Aren't a lot of promos on CD-R instead of dubplates these days?"

yes, most do this. You can just write it off and play it out before test presses/promo's/the real thing comes out.

Iv seen this arguement many times, the fact is
Mp3 sites are good to get listeners, but there is nothing better then gwetting on the street and handing things out (posters, promo cd's ect.) and getting local ppl into it.
since there more likly to be impressed and hand over money and not just wait for a new track to d/l

the mp3 format is brill. just think without it we'd have no net radio, audio clips on record stores, and a lot less artists on the scene coz they haven't been promoted.

i'm copying what silver said a while ago about them, they're like a knife - very useful but dangerous in the wrong hands

I dont think it should be aimed directly at MP3's as there are many other formats like it out there That cause as much harm .I think it helps a great deal for promotion.Atomicb said it well.
