Heya people!
I'm new here at the forum, so I thought it would be nice to introduce myself a little bit: I'm 20 years old, from the Netherlands, and I had been listening to happyhardcore.com radio for quite some time, but yesterday decided to subscribe myself to the forum too :).
It's really great to see happy hardcore is still alive in the UK and Canada... here in the Netherlands, the land of its origin (although you probably won't all agree with me on that ;) ), it's quite dead. We had a happy hardcore hype back in 1995/1997, which all started with Charly Lownoise & Mental Theo reaching the charts with 'Wonderfull Days'.
The music which is still quite popular here is hardcore/gabber, but from what I read here I think 'hardcore' has a different meaning over there than here in Holland. When I hear you guys talk about hardcore you often mean breakbeat-like stuff like 'DJ Ham - Uplifting'. Here in the Netherlands, hardcore originated at about 1991. Before that, all electronic music was simply called 'house', but in 1991 there came about a split between the softer styles (mellow) and the harder styles (which were called hardcore), with labels such as Rotterdam Records, and DJ's such as Paul, Rob. Hardcore became even bigger in 1996, similar with the happy hardcore hype, and it even became a whole youth culture with own dress codes (nike shoes, shaved heads and britely colored training suits), gigantic parties - I'm talking about parties of up to 20.000 people: the 'gabbers'. Around 1998 hardcore had a dip, less and less parties were thrown, but since about 2001 hardcore is coming back here (with producers such as Endymion, DJ Promo, Catscan, and new editions of fantastic parties like the legendary 10-years anniversary of Thunderdome last october)... though it's too bad that the once so-friendly 'gabber-spirit' is gone now for a large part, and there is lots of aggression on (especially the smaller) hardcore raves.
Besides hardcore other styles of electronical music are very popular over here, like trance, techno and something we call 'hardstyle' over here (which is basically slow (140 BPM) yet very hard and pounding music)
It is oriented more at the big raves (Mystery Land, Innercity, Trance Energy, Qlimax, etc...) than in clubs (like it is in the UK, I've been told) though.
Okay, hope I didn't bore you with all of this :) I'm sure I'll have some fun here!

I found this old movie (from 1996) and I thought it would be nice to show you how an old hardcore rave would look like here in Holland:

you missed out an important point though... most gabers are skinheads and they don't like it when you're not one of them. They also take a lot of speed and acid and are really violent & agressive. Well, at least that is how they are here in Belgium. Are they like that in the Netherlands as well? Dunno the scene well over there.
If it wern't for them, I would go to hardcore parties.
French hardcore is quite on the rise. They moving up here slowly. They sell of few vinyls up in Maastricht as well. At the Cirrus and the miracle. The guy that owns the miracle shop is cool. We had a long chat with him when we were there last.

I AM A ROTTERDAM........GABBERRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
There used to be a club in Leicester called Die Hard - they had a mental gabber room downstairs. Whatever happened to Clarkee, HMS, Loftgroover, The Music Maker etc? Bet they all sell mobile phones these days...

Hmm, I don't really agree with you on that. Especially the gabbers around 1996/1997 were far from skinheads: the only thing that they had in common were the shaved head (and not even all gabbers had a shaved head) and the bomber jacket, the rest of the look was totally different (brightly colored clothes, sports shoes, etc...) but more important: it's totally against skinhead beliefs to be gabber (real skinheads detest drugs, and they hate electronical music too). But since a few years the ambiance has changed (and that's what I also meant in my post), and the so called 'gabberskins' (who dress exactly like skinheads - army boots, Lonsdale, etc... and often are racists) were born. Really too bad, cause they are a shame for both the real skinheads (who are not necessary racist at all) and the real gabbers ('gabber' is dutch for 'friend', so it has nothing to do with racism, just with partying). That's also the reason I go less and less to hardcore parties (yet a party like Thunderdome still was amazing, mainly because skinhead-look wasn't allowed there), but more to parties with oldschool (1991-1992) and early hardcore (1993-1997), because the ambiance is still great there. I hope the scene will change again though... who knows? Positive sounds are coming from the remnants of the real gabbers who are fed up with everything that's happing in their scene right now...

Perhaps I should come up to the Netherlands then. I suppose that the gabbers we get here are different. I suppose it's different there. Strange though, it's so close...
But I know what you mean from b4... I remember thoses happy hardcore CD's that ID&T put out along wit Arcade. I listened to them along with gabber when I was 12. Good memories

Heya. Yes, I've been to Masters of Hardcore last year! It was a really nice party back then, quite some of those fake people I was talking about, but lots of real gabbers too.
Your signature means this: "The number 2301 is the hardest thing there is, god damnit" :) It was inspired by the track 'Holland is godverdomme het hardste' I guess? That's a gabber track which was quite popular here last summer.
By the way, funny to hear hardstyle is getting bigger in the UK too. I always thought people from the UK only liked music when it was fast... seeing that even UK Hardhouse (like on the Nukleuz CD's) is fast compared to hardstyle :). Hardstyle is nice music though, I especially like DJ Zany, Pavo and Dana (the last two are hardcore DJ's as well as hardstyle DJ's)...

Ah, that's another thing that's different in the Netherlands and the UK: the meaning of the word 'house'. Here in the Netherlands the word 'house' is simply a covering for most kinds of electronical music, similar to a word like 'rock' or 'pop'. So happy hardcore, trance, techno, uk hardhouse, ambient, club, terror, etc..., they are all 'house'. But from your post, I'm guessing 'house' is something different in the UK... what exactly is your interpretation of 'house'?
