the art of DJing improves with practice but you obviously need to have the gist of it first before starting and you will have commit yourself to it!

If you need xtra help then there are some good books out there with advice. My mate certainly has improved since he bought this book of some sort..

HARDCORE FOREVER
if video games affected us children, then we would all be running around in dark rooms, munching magical pills and dancing to repetitive music!

For every set you spin live, there should be like, 150 hours practice! ;)

EDIT: Not literally. You get the general idea. :)

you don't necessarily need to know the gist of it before starting to play. I just started buying hhc vinyl because I was sick of listening to happy 2b hardcore and the crappy "world of..." series. So I bought some cheap decks and started screwing around. I didn't know how to beat match or anything about song structure. But one day it just clicked and took off from there...

So I guess to wrap up my comments..

yes the true art of a good dj is practice

no you don't need to read books to be a good dj

and some people are born with the talent and pick up on djing naturally (not myself haha...took me 2 months to learn to beatmatch!)

Just like what cosmic sorta said, you need to have the natural predisposition first off to be a good dj. No matter how hard you practice, just like any other activity that takes skill to do if you don't have the natural talent for it then you just aren't going to excel at it unfortunately. Sure you can learn to beatmatch and do the basics but not everyone can reach that level that we all hope to achieve one day. Not everyone can be a dj, just like not everyone can be a rock star, football player, etc. But if you do have the natural ability, then practice is the only way that you will ever be able to reach your true potential.

I'm convinced that anyone can be a dj.

True that most people are not going to be superstars but they can still kick alot of ass and make themselves happy.

It's like the anaology

not everyone can be a rock star but anyone can be in a kick ass Judas Priest tribute band.

:)

But if you practice and learn those "tricks" you can bring any two tracks together and make them work ;)

if you put your mind to it you can do anything. if i can mix then anyone can mix. you just need to have the will power to keep at it. don't expect to be a superstar dj overnight,it took me 2 years to get my first gig

I have been mixing for many a year now and have played at loads of pubs & clubs in London, but I still make sure I'm on the decks nearly every day. Practice will definately help, but there are other things that help too. IMO having a load of choons to choose from and getting new choons as often as possible is also good to keep your intrest levels up! The more you're into it, the more you'll want to practice. Knowing your choons too can be a bonus like DJ Cosmic said, knowing where to drop a choon etc'. Also IMO I think that no amount of tutoring or reading, watching videos can help that much. You can just end up getting stressed that you cant run before you can walk. Hell, if it was that easy to do, all your fav DJ's wouldn't be that special! Practice, experience and patience!

Mostly harmless...
