It's a way for record companies to basically "test" the reaction of people who listen to it. They are usually a limited run, released quite earlier than the proposed official release. Dj's are the main target for these test pressings. They play 'em out to the crowds, radio, etc., and judge how the track is actually received. Sometimes the label might decide that the track will not sell very well if officially released. If you have the chance to pick up a TP, do it! I hope that helps a little.

^^those are promo's..
Test presses are when the record pressing plant does up a few copies of a record to see if they are satisfactory pressings, and everything is pressed correctly.. a "test". once the artist ok's the test pressings, the full pressing run is done.

Thanks for clearing that up. I had that idea in my head since day one, so I guess I finally find out that I'm wrong. Good to know!

Test press - an actual sound quailty press usually only 2-20 copies pressed to see if the record sounds correct.... normally not given out or sold. Test presses are very expensive (4-5 times the normal cost of one record) to make and that is normally why you pay more for them. If you make many of them to sell and they sound bad then you are out of pocket alot of money.
Promo copy - A actually limited pressing to see reaction from DJ's and select stores selling the records. Usually 20-100 pressed. Normally given out or sold.
