You remind me of some former israeli soldiers, I have seen in a tv-documentary not long ago. After their national service, they told their old life to f**k off and went to a very long journey to Goa doing drugs, meditation & other spiritual stuff, party, etc.

Ha ha! Awesome story. Did they ever go back to Israel?

I've not been doing too much drug-taking, meditation or anything spiritual. Drugs just aren't worth the risk over here, and an entire year away from them will do me good. I hope to never do coke again (such a pointless drug) but I will definitely have the very occasional disco biscuit. Maybe twice a year or something.

I did start the Hardcore Highlights blog - so at least something productive has come out of this year-long trip of boozery and rice. Could be the title for my debut novel. A Year On The Road: Boozery & Rice.

back on topic, i work at a liquor store and i am a gardener of sorts here in beautiful British Columbia.
somehow this large city managed to appear in the middle of nowhere in the mountains, quite the place to live actually!! http://www.for.gov.bc.ca/dkl/photos/Nelson%20aerial%20view.jpg

i'm still pretty jealous of that vietnam beach

Ha ha, I watched The Beach the other day. And at Christmas time, I went to the actual island where it was filmed. I threw-up in the bay actually. Was really hungover, and the sea was really rough. So close to actually shitting myself as well, it was an unpleasant experience to say the least. Loads of little tropical fishies came to the surface to eat my puke though. Two sides to every coin, I guess.

As for monies, I'm just living off my savings that I budgeted for the trip. I've got enough to last me until something like, between mid November until the start of January. It depends where I go, and how much hotel prices vary in different countries.

Man, that is absolutely glorious. Love to live somewhere like that. Gorgeous.

Good luck, hope you get in :-) What course is it?

It's all gonna be gone very soon though, I can't stand uni and will not be carrying on, it's a ridiculously isolating experience and if I am brutally honest I don't think I have ever met so many people with their head up their own arse, I have been blanked so many times it's unreal.

I used to be good at IT but Uni totally killed my interest in computers full stop but it's the only thing I'm really qualified for. I did get loads of experience and knowledge stuff under my belt when I was at college but I just really don't wanna work with them...however I haven't got a clue what else there is I can do out there that will bring in the dough I am still in shock that I have to go and work, I'm still in shock that I'm nearly 20 years old, I think of myself as like 12 and don't really think about stuff like work or employment or jobs...it sort of sounds fun though, I would love to be like doing something really interesting and cool but I dunno what's out there really.

I wish I could work for like cartoon network or Nicktoons or something but I don't have anything to offer them at all apart from knowledge of cartoons

That sucks about your Uni experience. I never went myself, so can't really relate too much. I have met various people over the years that are Uni mates of my close mates. One thing that strikes me is the generic Uni accent that everyone seems to adopt. They sound like fcuking idiots. Lots of people that I used to be friendly with during school and college have come back from Uni with the most embarrassing, fake, semi-posh/west-country tinted accent I've ever heard. What the fcuk is that about?

Where are you again? Brighton is it? Where do you live, and where are you at Uni? What is it about it that's isolating?

As for you job worries and general "I haven't got a clue what I'm gonna do" thoughts - don't worry about it too much mate. I am in entirely the same boat as you, but just five years on. Everyone's like this. No one has a clue what they want to do (except for Brian - fcuking Micro-Biologist!) Especially at our ages, and it'll probably be the same right up until we're in our 50's. We'll just stumble through life somehow. It'll work out. Won't be much fun probably, but time will elapse, stuff will happen, and then we'll die.

Sounds like a bit of a shit job. Bet you've never heard that one before, huh?

So what are you doing? Just looking to see if people's diseases are staying away or coming back by examining regular samples of their fluids and yucky stuff?

we test things other than shit, but according to my wife's brothers I'm a poop specialist =P

we do different kinds of cultures and stains (ie bacterial, fungal, acid fast) based on what the physician suspects. if something grows (that isn't normal flora for that area of the body) we'll id the organism(s) using biochemicals & run sensitivities on it to see what drugs it's susceptible to and give those results to the physician so he can prescribe antibiotics.

I'm never allowed to discuss work at the dinner table

The same one you hated so much years ago?

actually no. i'm working at the government regulated one now so i'm making about twice as much and doing half the work. turns out that working in hell for a couple years does pay off... somehow.

but i seem to be getting fewer hours so i'm no further ahead really, but it does leave me with more spare time.

Most of them stay until they spent their bonus, they receive from israli army after leaving. It must be quite high. A few ones don't survive a trip, others start a business over there and never return.
