What happened, mate???
I thought you were all good. Being nervous is perfectly normal. I still get nervous every time I play, and I've been doing it for a while!
If you want to be any kind of performer, you have to overcome the fear.
As far as letting anyone down, no worries. **throws tomato**
Just kidding, relax and don't be too hard on yourself!!!

Hell, whenever I step up to the decks I'm still nervous about the beats I spin. It takes a while to get used to the feeling, but it will always be there. Besides, when ya just start pumping out your rhymes you'll feel better after a bit. Being nervous is natural.
If you let your nervousness run your life, you wont really have a life. Just challenge yourself and go for it anyways.
As you said, it's a perfect setting to mc but you just have to step past being nervous.
Plus, plus, plus... a beer or two may help.

It's a lost opportunity... true
But you've let yourself down more than anyone else really.
Although I do understand being nerveous...
Perhaps you should try and chat at as many small parties as possible and move on to bigger ones from that. If there's a local radio station, try go there once a week. The more you chat in front of an audiance, the less stressed you will get. Need to work through that one first...
Persit and you will thrive

mcjutt,
i dun know u at all but, my god, i know nerves. Everybody gets em, but not everybody gets ova em. I dun think u've let anybody down, cos mates dun eva let each other down. I'm sure tonnes of ppl have faith in u, but that wont matter unless u have faith in urself.
Once u get into tha swing of things, it'll just flow, u'll be havin tha best time of ur life, and tha feelin'll just get bigger and better tha more u enjoy urself. Even if u fully have to prep urself for it beforehand, just get out there and do it. If u stand there lookin like a total twat, who gives a flying &*#$. U might be a lil put off, but pick it up afterwards and blow em away.
Keep smilin and doin what u do best, hun

...Feelin' like you're in another world, but I, can't read your mind...4 o'clock in morning and it's starting to get light...

Hiya matey,

Just a quick note to calm you down. There will be other opportunites so don't beat yourself up. As for nerves, there's a couple of things that I've learned that might help you. Firstly, my very first gig in front of a major crowd was the Camden Palace with Kiss FM back in 1992 with the Smart E's. Throughout the day I couldnt eat, walk, talk... I was practically a wreck.

After about three gigs, it changes, you get

A) Not bothered because you're tired and just want to get home to sleep so you do the job

b) Really excited because you're gonna have a great time.

Usually it's b because the adrenalins running high.

As for making a twat of yourself, I'll tell you a quick story. We (the Smart E's) did a gig in the States, and om arrival to one gig, we were told that there were no keyboards for us to use on stage. that meant that we had to actually DANCE. Now I was terrified and so was Tom because we don't dance. So we either pulled the gig or really made twats of ourselves... we went on stage, and danced. And believe it or not the crod cheered, not jeered. They loved the show, and we did ourselves proud.

The moral to the story is, that crowds WANT you on stage. You're THERE, and they want you there. Only in extreme circumstances will you get jeered off (Ive never ever seen it personally) because you're doing something up there that they appreciate and many would LOVE to be doing. So it just doesnt happen. They WANT you to succeed, and anyone that doesn';t and makes any comment is an ******* and is a waste of skin.

If you're nervous then here's a couple of tips for performing on stage.

1) Don't look direct at anyone if you're not comfortable up there. look past the crowd and focus on a staircase, bar, back wall, everywhere, but not direct at anyone. Keep smiling and look as though you're having a really good time and the crowd will feed off that. Look terrified and they'll be uncomfortable and won't bounce back off your performance.

2) When you get there walk around. Look at the stage and look for wires, cables, lights etc etc. Make a note where you can walk and where you cant... just so you don't fall over yourself.

3) Have a beer or two, and you'll think "F**K it... I'm doing it!"

Overall, you will enjoy it once you've beeen doing it for a while. Oh yeah, and the chicks will love you for it.

I watched Luna C in San Jose in October as the sound system went down and he was left there silent with a crowd of people. What did he do? He quickly switched to the stage monitors and kept it going. That was THE most professional thing I've ever witnessed. If you were there at the gig then you saw it too, and you'll know what I'm talking about. Everyone loved it and he was a real hero.

Get up there matey, and do the gig next time. You'll love it !!

Cheers

Nick
